This vibrant Guacamayas basket is handwoven by members of a cooperative in Boyacá, Colombia. They use an ancient coil technique and the raw material fique (a locally-grown natural plant fibre). 

Story

Guacamayas are colourful spiral weave baskets that were used by the indigenous Laches in Colombia to collect and transport eggs and grains, and for special cultural and spiritual ceremonies. They are made from local plant fibres including fique and palm tree leaves. The weaving of guacamayas is a protected craft and one that is passed from generation to generation.
