Woven from palm fibres in the northern region of Chimichagua Cesar in Colombia, these colourful wall hangings were traditionally used as floor or table mats. The crafting process involves harvesting the indigenous palm leaves, collecting natural pigments, dyeing and weaving using stick looms - before rubbing with a flat stone to make each piece shiny and smooth. Each design is unique and conceived by the artisans themselves.

Story

The weaving of palma estera mats is said to have originated during colonial times when the communities of Chimichagua crafted symbolic patterns as a way of communicating with one another. Men usually harvest the sharp leaves using machetes before leaving them to dry overnight. The fibers become paler, and they are rinsed of any residue, which allows the dye to absorb more easily. Using stick looms, the artisans weave colors together to make vibrant patterns, often featuring a diamond motif. The last step of the process is to rub the mats with a stone to create a shiny finish and remove any rough edges.
